Start with the brief

Plan the image.
Then plan the workflow.

Resolution is one part of the decision. The camera also needs to fit the lenses, crew, production environment and final edit.

01 / CAPTURE

Filmmaking & corporate video

Define the look, camera movement, lens coverage and recording needs. Plan a camera rig that works for the shoot, whether it is an interview, product film or branded production.

02 / CONNECT

Studio & live production

Check the live signal separately from internal recording. Scope video I/O, monitoring, audio, timecode and switching around the intended programme format.

03 / COMPOSITE

Virtual production

Bring camera output, keying, tracking, synchronization and color management into the same system plan. A tracked virtual set also needs lens data and calibration.

Camera selection guide

Compare the system,
not just the headline.

These current RED camera families offer different sensor formats and recording capabilities. Use the guide below to frame a project discussion, then confirm the exact model, lens mount and recording settings.

6K / SUPER35

KOMODO-X

Compact 6K Super35 global shutter system. Records up to 80 fps at 6K 17:9 or 120 fps at 4K 17:9. Check the body’s RF or Nikon Z mount configuration and the required camera rig.

Official specifications

8K / VV

V-RAPTOR XE

8K VV global shutter system with recording up to 60 fps at 8K 17:9. Consider lens coverage, storage and the post-production plan when moving to a larger sensor format.

Official specifications

8K / HIGH FRAME RATE

V-RAPTOR [X]

8K VV global shutter system with recording up to 120 fps at 8K 17:9. Maximum frame rates depend on recording quality; 8K 120 fps uses LQ or ELQ settings.

Official specifications

Manufacturer specifications vary by model, mount and firmware. A project configuration, equipment availability and commercial terms are confirmed separately.

Live & virtual production

A complete camera-to-screen plan.

A cinema camera’s internal recording format is different from the signal sent to a live system.

For example, KOMODO-X lists 12G-SDI monitoring output up to 4K at 60p. Plan the required output format, capture hardware, synchronization and monitoring before connecting a camera to a switcher or virtual production computer.

For an Aximmetry workflow, review how the camera signal, tracking data, lens calibration and graphics system will work together. Global shutter helps avoid rolling shutter skew, but lighting and LED flicker still require testing.

Our earlier RED KOMODO virtual production article documents a previous studio workflow. Discuss your current camera and system requirements with us.

Before the shoot

Build a practical production brief.

  1. Deliverables & recordingFinal resolution and aspect ratio, required frame rates, RAW or other recording format, shoot duration and the intended edit and grade.
  2. Lenses & camera movementPreferred lenses and mount, sensor coverage, handheld or supported shots, focus control and the complete rig.
  3. Live connectionsProgramme output, SDI format, capture or switching hardware, audio, timecode, monitoring and synchronization requirements.
  4. Media & peopleQualified recording media, storage and backup arrangements, crew responsibilities, post-production system and production schedule.
Questions answered

RED camera workflow FAQs.

What is the difference between KOMODO-X and V-RAPTOR?

KOMODO-X uses a 6K Super35 global shutter sensor. V-RAPTOR XE and V-RAPTOR [X] use 8K VV global shutter sensors. Choose around lens coverage, camera rig, recording format and the frame rates your production needs.

Do all RED cameras record 8K at 120 fps?

No. KOMODO-X reaches 6K 17:9 at up to 80 fps. V-RAPTOR XE reaches 8K 17:9 at up to 60 fps, while V-RAPTOR [X] reaches 8K 17:9 at up to 120 fps. Available modes depend on the model, format, recording quality and media.

Does global shutter remove lighting flicker?

Global shutter avoids the skew associated with rolling shutter capture during motion. It does not guarantee flicker-free LED screens or artificial lighting. Test the lighting, shutter settings and synchronization before the shoot.

Can I use my existing lenses?

Check the exact camera mount, lens or adapter compatibility, sensor coverage and the controls you need. RF and Nikon Z versions are separate camera configurations. Lens selection should also allow for focus, zoom and calibration requirements in a tracked virtual production.

Why plan a REDCODE RAW workflow?

R3D recording provides RAW image data for flexible grading. The production also needs a practical plan for media, storage, backups, proxies, editing and color management. Agree on the intended post-production workflow before choosing recording settings.

Does 8K recording mean 8K live output?

No. Internal recording and live output are different. For example, KOMODO-X and V-RAPTOR [X] list 12G-SDI monitoring output up to 4K at 60p. RED Connect uses a separate licensed, model-specific network and processing workflow.

Can RED cameras work with Aximmetry virtual production?

A RED camera can be considered as part of an Aximmetry workflow, but the complete system must be scoped and tested. Review camera output, capture hardware, synchronization, color management, tracking data and lens calibration against the selected camera and software edition.

What should I send to Will Dylan for a project discussion?

Send your brief, shoot date and location, preferred camera model, lenses, crew requirements, recording resolution and frame rate, live output needs and final deliverables. Equipment availability and the project scope are confirmed during the discussion.
