Live streaming can help a business reach remote audiences, answer questions and create reusable event content. Its value depends on the audience, programme, delivery quality and follow-up. It does not automatically reduce every cost or guarantee more sales.
1. Make an event available beyond the venue
A stream gives people an option to watch when travel is inconvenient. Plan around their time zones, devices, connectivity and access needs. For international audiences, test the chosen platform from the relevant locations; availability can vary, including in mainland China.
2. Offer a different cost structure
Remote participation may reduce some attendee travel or accommodation costs. Production, connectivity, platform access, moderation and support still require resources. Compare the full budget for an in-person, online or hybrid event before deciding which format offers better value.
3. Support useful business conversations
A product demonstration or expert briefing can answer questions that help viewers evaluate a service. Give them a relevant next step, such as a detailed resource or enquiry page. Track qualified enquiries and other agreed outcomes rather than assuming viewing numbers will translate directly into revenue.

4. Invite questions during the programme
Moderated Q&A, polls or demonstrations can let audiences take part. Choose interaction that suits the purpose and platform. Appoint someone to review questions, manage inappropriate comments and pass clear cues to the presenter. Online participation offers a different experience from face-to-face discussion, so design for it deliberately.
5. Give viewers a reason to join live
A scheduled announcement, live demonstration or chance to ask an expert questions can make attendance worthwhile. Be clear whether a replay will be available and avoid suggesting artificial scarcity. A clear agenda and useful reminders are more informative than exaggerated promises.
6. Extend the value of the recording
Where permissions allow, a recorded stream can become a replay, short clips, a written summary or an FAQ. Review sensitive or time-dependent material before sharing it. Captions, descriptive titles and relevant links help people understand the content after the live event.
What makes a stream work well?
- A defined audience and measurable objective.
- A programme that is paced for online viewing.
- Clear audio, readable slides and appropriate camera coverage.
- Tested connectivity, local recording and agreed backup procedures.
- A rehearsal using the actual presenters and delivery platform.
- Moderation, audience support and an agreed follow-up plan.
